Long Neck Goose (2026) Trio for Flute, Oboe & Bassoon

Long Neck Goose was written as part of the “Oboe Intensive,” a collaboration between composition teacher, Joseph Sowa, and oboe coach, Jennet Ingle. The premiere performance was by Carol Wadlinger (flute), Judy Kleppel (oboe) and Alex Taddei (bassoon) on April 8th, 2026. A true collaboration, I believe it was an enjoyable experience for all four of us with each contributing significantly to the final work. Dr. Judy Kleppel, to whom this piece is dedicated, was particularly helpful.

Composer’s Note:  This piece imagines a day in the life of a Canada Goose, how he struts around, forages for food, and occasionally argues with his comrades. I hope you can hear winter approaching, how he takes off into flight and lands, as well as how he ends the piece by waddling up to front and center to take a bow. In the bigger picture, this piece is about soaring large distances despite the difficulties we face day to day. Although certainly written with children in mind, I hope it is enjoyed by the child within each of us.
